One of the largest Powerball jackpots ever has been won, the lottery group said Wednesday night. At $1.72 Billion, it was the 2nd-largest jackpot ever in the United States.
The winners beat the 1-in-292.2 million odds by picking the magic combination: 22, 24, 40, 52, 64 and Powerball 10. The power play multiplier was 3X.
In all, 7 tickets across the country matched all five white balls to win a $1 million prize. Two tickets sold matched all five white balls but also had the Power Play option meaning the owner won $2 million.
There were also 121 tickets nationwide that won $50,000 prizes and another 24 tickets won a $100,000 prize.
Wednesday’s Powerball drawing had more than 5,342,900 winning tickets overall and lower-tier cash prizes worth $36.87 million.

The winner can choose between a 30-year annuitized prize of $1.72 Billion or a lump sum payment of $756.6 million. Both options are pretax estimates.
The $1.72 Billion prize is second only to a $2.04 billion prize won in California in November 2022.

The jackpot had been swelling since Jul. 19, 2023, when least one lucky ticket won a $1.08 billion jackpot. Before Wednesday night’s drawing, no one had matched the five white balls and red Powerball in the past 36 chances to win.
The odds of picking the correct Powerball grand prize numbers are one in 292,201,338. A total of 44 states, plus Washington, D.C., Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands, that participate in Powerball. Powerball drawings are held every Monday, Wednesday and Saturday at 10:59 p.m. Western time.
