Spain – El Gordo Information

El Gordo de La Primitiva is one of Spain’s favourite lotteries, known for its impressive jackpots and its “reintegro” prize feature.

El Gordo History

Spain’s first national lottery took place in 1812, and the addition of a special Christmas drawing which evolved into today’s well-known Loteria de Navidad raffle was added soon after in 1818.

El Gordo de la Primitiva is supervised by Loterías y Apuestas del Estado, the Spanish regulatory agency for national lotteries. The Loterías y Apuestas del Estado was established in 1985, assuming responsibility for the administration and promotion of national lotteries throughout Spain.

El Gordo was a later addition to Spain’s lottery offerings, joining the La Primitiva lottery as a monthly draw in 1993, and evolving into a weekly draw by 1997. El Gordo offers impressive jackpots which frequently roll over into double-digit millions such as these top prizes:  €33,024,545 (2011) , €27,152,932 (2008), and €26,214,521 (2007).

El Gordo Rules

In order to play El Gordo, select 5 numbers from a guess range of 1-54 and an additional number from a guess range of 0-9 from a different number matrix.  The additional number enables players to win supplementary prizes and is necessary to complete the jackpot winning number selection.

Fans of El Gordo may wish to play Spain that takes place four times a week!

Winning the El Gordo

El Gordo has nine prizes categories, and a winning ticket must successfully match all 5 numbers in the regular guess set as well as the additional number in order to claim the jackpot. El Gordo promises a starting jackpot of €5 million and enjoys frequent rollovers which lead to impressive jackpots such as the €33,024,545 prize pool of 2011.

As of 1st January 2013, Spanish lottery prizes that exceed €2,500 will be subject to a government legislated tax at a rate of 20%.
